The Association was formed in 1980 in order to provide recreational facilities for the village, and in particular its children. Initially no land was available until 1985 when Captain John McDonald-Buchanan of Cottesbrooke Estate kindly granted a lease to the Association at a peppercorn rent. The field has been developed over a number of years as a result of hard work and the availability of funds. The original members of the Association were responsible for the backbreaking work of clearing the field of stones, levelling and seeding the grass. A tractor and cutting equipment was purchased together with a set of goal posts. The playing field as we now know it was born. Over the years swings, a see-saw, slide
and basketball hoop have been added.
In acknowledgement of the needs of the
teenagers in the village, a skateboard
half-pipe was purchased in 1997 and has
proved extremely popular. In April 2000 the Association became a Registered Charity no: 1085011. Funds raised go towards our running costs; last year's public liability insurance was £1,600 as well as improvements to the field. Funds are raised through the organising of four car boot sales and a quiz evening, each year together with grants and donations that come from a variety of sources including the Parish Council and Hollowell Steam. Like most of the village committees
we are looking for new blood. Without
an active committee the Playing Field
will no longer be able to continue. If
you feel you would like to join us either
as a full member of the committee or
would like to donate some time to assist
us in some way, please contact Martin
Grey, Chairman, on 505723 or Mark Woollven,
Secretary, on 505534.
